Why Steroids Aren’t Harmless

Steroids come in two categories: anabolic and corticosteroids. Anabolic steroids are man-made substances related to sex hormones; they treat hormone problems in men, muscle loss from cancer treatments and delayed puberty. Using anabolic steroids for any reason other than to treat these medical issues can be dangerous and life threatening. On the other hand, corticosteroids treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis, asthma and allergies, but they also suppress the immune system. They are taken by mouth, through injection, as an inhaler or nasal spray or as topical creams. Corticosteroids commonly treat many conditions, but if you use anabolic steroids to increase athletic performance or muscle mass, then you increase the risks of cardiac arrest and other life-threatening conditions.

Steroid Side Effects

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, anabolic steroids cause a type of dependence that is unique from the dependencies of other substances. These drugs do not trigger a rapid release of dopamine, which is responsible for feelings of pleasure that lead to drug addiction. No, long-term use of anabolic steroids changes brain pathways and chemicals to cause some of the same behaviors as abusing other drugs. Some effects of anabolic steroid abuse include the following examples:

  • Acne
  • Breast growth in men
  • Testicle shrinkage
  • Voice deepening and growth of facial hair in women
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems/heart attack
  • Liver disease and liver cancer
  • Kidney damage
  • Aggressive behavior

Seek help to quit using these drugs and to address these problems.

Dangers of Steroid Abuse

Using anabolic steroids for long periods of time can lead to addiction. Although this type of steroid does not cause physical dependence like other drugs do, it can lead to emotional dependence as people begin to depend upon the drug to feel and function normally. People who use anabolic steroids for non-medical reasons risk developing extremely aggressive behavior called “’roid rage,” but they may also struggle with depression, extreme mood swings, paranoia and delusions. In other words, these drugs are dangerous, and you may need professional help to get and stay clean from them.
